The digital revolution has produced the most diverse, participatory, and amplified communications medium humans have ever had: the Internet. The ACLU believes in an uncensored Internet, a vast free-speech zone deserving at least as much First Amendment protection as that afforded to traditional media such as books, newspapers, and magazines.

The ACLU has been at the forefront of protecting online freedom of expression in its myriad forms. We brought the first case in which the U.S. Supreme Court declared speech on the Internet equally worthy of the First Amendment’s historical protections. In that case, Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union , the Supreme Court held that the government can no more restrict a person’s access to words or images on the Internet than it can snatch a book out of someone’s hands or cover up a nude statue in a museum.

But that principle has not prevented constant new threats to Internet free speech. The ACLU remains vigilant against laws or policies that create new decency restrictions for online content, limit minors’ access to information, or allow the unmasking of anonymous speakers without careful court scrutiny.

We are in a generation, where technology has surrounded us from all sides. Our everyday life runs on the use of technology, be it in the form of an alarm clock or a table lamp. Technology has been an important part of our daily lives. Therefore, it is important for the students to be familiar with the term technology. A warm welcome to everyone gathered here today. I am here to deliver a speech on technology which has taken a tremendous role in our day to day life. We all are in a generation where everything is dependent on technology. Let’s understand what technology is through the lens of Science. 

Technology comes in the form of tangible and intangible properties by exerting physical and mental force to achieve something that adds value. For example, a mobile phone is tangible, and the network connection used by the phone is intangible. Technology has taken its place as indispensable, wherein it has resulted in economic benefits, better health care, time-saving, and better lifestyle.

Due to technology, we have a significant amount of knowledge to improve our lives and solve problems. We can get our work done efficiently and effectively. As long as you know how to access technology, it can be used and proves to benefit people of all ages greatly. Technology is constantly being modified and upgraded every passing year. 

The evolution of technology has made it possible to achieve lots in less time. Technology has given tools and machines to be used to solve problems around the world. There has been a complete transformation in the way we do things because of contributions from scientific technology. We can achieve more tasks while saving our time and hence in a better place than our previous generation. 

Right from the ringing of the morning alarm to switching off the fan, everything runs behind the technology. Even the microphone that I am using is an innovation of technology and thus the list continues. With several inventions of hi-tech products, our daily needs are available on a screen at our fingertips. These innovations and technologies have made our lives a lot easier. Everything can be done at the comfort of your home within a couple of hours or so. These technologies have not only helped us in the digital platform but have also given us innovations in the field of medical, educational, industrial as well as in agricultural sectors. If we go back to the older generations, it would take days to get any things solved, even if there were not many treatments for several diseases. 

But today with the innovations of technology, many diseases can be treated and diagnosed within a shorter period of time. The relationship between humans and technology has continued for ages and has given rise to many innovations. It has made it easier for us to handle our daily chores starting from home, office, schools and kitchen needs. It has made available basic necessities and safer living spaces. We can sit at home comfortably and make transactions through the use of online banking. Online shopping, video calling, and attending video lectures on the phone have all been possible due to the invention of the internet. 

People in the past would write letters to communicate with one another, and today due to technology, traditional letters have been replaced by emails and mobile phones. These features are the essential gifts of technology. Everything is just at our fingertips, right from turning on the lights to doing our laundry. The whole world runs on technology and hence, we are solely dependent on it. But everything has its pros and cons. While the benefits of technology are immense, it also comes with some negative effects and possibly irreversible damages to humanity and our planet. 

We have become so dependent on technology that we often avoid doing things on our own. It as a result makes us lazy and physically inactive. This has also led to several health issues such as obesity and heart diseases. We prefer booking a cab online rather than walking a few kilometres. Technology has increased screen time, and thus, children are no longer used to playing in the playgrounds but are rather found spending hours on their phones playing video games. This has eroded children’s creativity, intelligence, and memory. No doubt, technology is a very essential part of our life, but we should not be totally dependent on it. We should practise being more fit and do regular activities on our own to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The other aspects that have been badly affected us are that since technology replaced human interference, is unemployment. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., were meant to connect people and increase our community circle. Still, it has made people all the more lonely, with cases of depression on the rise amongst the youth. 

There are several controversies around the way world leaders have used technology in defence and industrialisation under the banner of development and advancements. The side effects of technology have resulted in pollution, climate change, forest fires, extreme storms, cyclones, impure air, global warming, land area getting reduced and natural resources getting extinct. It’s time we change our outlook towards selfish technology and bring about responsible technology. Every nation needs to set aside budgets to come up with sustainable technological developments. 

As students, we should develop creative problem solving using critical thinking to bring clean technology into our world. As we improve our nation, we must think of our future for a greener and cleaner tomorrow. You would be glad to know that several initiatives have been initiated to bring awareness amongst children and youth to invent cleaner technology. 

For example, 15-year-old Vinisha Umashankar invented a solar ironing cart and has been awarded the Earth Shot Prize by the Royal Foundation of the duke and duchess of Cambridge and honoured to speak at the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland. Her invention should be an inspiration to each one of us to pursue clean technology.

The top five technologically advanced countries are Japan, America, Germany, China and South Korea. We Indians will make our mark on this list someday. Technology has a vital role in our lives but lets us be mindful that we control technology and that technology doesn’t control us. Technology is a tool to elevate humanity and is not meant to be a self-destroying mechanism under the pretext of economic development. Lastly, I would like to conclude my speech by saying that technology is a boon for our society but we should use it in a productive way.

Technology as we know it is the application of scientific ideas to develop a machine or a device for serving the needs of humans. We, human beings, are completely dependent on technology in our daily life. We have used technology in every aspect of our life starting from household needs, schools, offices, communication and entertainment. Our life has been more comfortable due to the use of technology. We are in a much better and comfortable position as compared to our older generation. This is possible because of various contributions and innovations made in the field of technology. Children have become more prone to video games and social media which have led to obesity and depression. Since they are no longer used to playing outside and socialising, they often feel isolated. Therefore, we must not totally be dependent on technology and should try using it in a productive way.

‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on the impact of technology on society. Technological inventions like the steam engine, electricity, batteries, the internet, computers, etc. have changed the entire evolution cycle. When we talk about the social impacts of technology, there are two sides; positive and negative.

On one side, technology has improved our communication and connectivity, education and knowledge sharing, workplace productivity, social activism, etc. With tech, we can make global connections, regardless of any geographical barriers. A new concept of telemedicine has evolved, where people living in remote areas can connect with medical professionals and consult on healthcare issues. We can learn about geopolitical developments, international summits, etc.

On the other hand, there are negative impacts of technology on society. The most common ones are privacy concerns and cyberbullying. Widespread use of technology often involves the collection and storage of personal information. This is a big privacy concern for everyone, as our data in someone else’s hand makes us vulnerable to data breaches, surveillance, and unauthorized access to our details.

Another impact is job displacement and inequality. Studies have shown that automation and AI have the potential to certain jobs, leading to unemployment and economic instability for some individuals. Recently, a survey was conducted that showed that the most vulnerable jobs to AI were data entry, basic customer service roles, and bookkeeping.

 A lot of people have fallen prey to cyberbullying. Talking to anonymous people over the internet can raise the flag of cyberbullying and online harassment. Young girls and students often fall victim to online harassment, which leads to emotional distress and mental well-being.

The list of negative impacts of technology on society doesn’t end here. Other drawbacks include dependence and addiction to technology, loss of traditional skills, information overload, social isolation, etc.

What you need to know about Section 230, the ‘most important law protecting internet speech’

Section 230 grants broad legal protections to websites that host user-generated content, like facebook and google..

A law credited with birthing the internet — and with spurring misinformation — has drawn bipartisan ire from lawmakers who are vowing to change it.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields internet platforms from liability for much of what its users post.

Both Democrats and Republicans point to Section 230 as a law that gives too much protection to companies like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Amazon and Google — with different reasons.

Former President Donald Trump wanted changes to Section 230 and  vetoed  a military spending bill in December because it didn’t include them. President Joe Biden has  said  that he’d be in favor of revoking the provision altogether. Biden’s pick for commerce secretary  said  she will pursue changes to Section 230 if confirmed.

There are  several bills  in Congress that would repeal Section 230 or amend its scope in order to limit the power of the platforms. In response,  even tech companies  have called for revising a law they say is outdated.

“In the offline world, it’s not just the person who pulls the trigger, or makes the threat or causes the damage — we hold a lot of people accountable,” said Mary Anne Franks, a law professor at the University of Miami. “Section 230 and the way it’s been interpreted essentially says none of those rules apply here.”

What is Section 230?

Congress passed the Communications Decency Act as Title V of the  Telecommunications Act of 1996 , when an increasing number of Americans  started to use  the internet. Its original purpose was to prohibit making “indecent” or “patently offensive” material available to children.

In 1997, the Supreme Court  struck down  the Communications Decency Act as an unconstitutional violation of free speech. But one of its provisions survived and, ironically, laid the groundwork for protecting online speech.

Section 230  says: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.”

That provision, grounded in the language of First Amendment law,  grants broad legal protections  to websites that host user-generated content. It essentially means they can’t be sued for libel or defamation for user posts. Section 230 is especially important to social media platforms, but it also protects news sites that allow reader comments or auction sites that let users sell products or services.

“Section 230 is understood primarily as a reaction to state court cases threatening to hold online service providers liable for (possible) libels committed by their users,” said Tejas Narechania, an assistant law professor at the University of California-Berkeley.

Section 230 changed that. For example, if a Facebook user publishes something defamatory, Facebook itself can’t be sued for defamation, but the post’s original author can be. That’s different from publishers like the New York Times, which can be held liable for content they publish — even if they didn’t originate the offending claim.

There are some exceptions in Section 230, including for copyright infringement and violations of federal and state law. But in general, the provision grants social media platforms  far more leeway  than other industries in the U.S.

Section 230 is the reason that you can post photos on Instagram, find search results on Google and list items on eBay. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights group,  calls it  “the most important law protecting internet speech.”

Section 230  is generally considered  to be speech-protective, meaning that it allows for more content rather than less on internet platforms. That objective was baked into the law.

In crafting Section 230, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Rep. Chris Cox, R-Calif., “both recognized that the internet had the potential to create a new industry,” wrote Jeff Kosseff in  “The Twenty-Six Words That Created the Internet .”

“Section 230, they hoped, would allow technology companies to freely innovate and create open platforms for user content,” Kosseff wrote. “Shielding internet companies from regulation and lawsuits would encourage investment and growth, they thought.”

Wyden and Cox were right — today, American tech platforms like Facebook and Google  have billions of users  and are among the wealthiest companies in the world. But they’ve also become vehicles for  disinformation  and  hate speech , in part because Section 230 left it up to the platforms themselves to decide how to moderate content.

Until relatively recently, most companies took a light touch to moderation of content that’s not illegal, but still problematic. (PolitiFact, for example, participates in programs run by Facebook and TikTok to  fight misinformation. )

“You don’t have to devote any resources to make your products and services safe or less harmful — you can solely go towards profit-making,” said Franks, the law professor. “Section 230 has gone way past the idea of gentle nudges toward moderation, towards essentially it doesn’t matter if you moderate or not.”

Without Section 230, tech companies would be forced to think about their legal liability in an entirely different way.

“Without Section 230, companies could be sued for their users’ blog posts, social media ramblings of homemade online videos,” Kosseff wrote. “The mere prospect of such lawsuits would force websites and online service providers to reduce or entirely prohibit user-generated content.”

Has the law changed?

The law has changed a little bit since 1996.

Section 230’s first major challenge came in 1997, when America Online was sued for failing to remove libelous ads that erroneously connected a man’s phone number to the Oklahoma City bombing. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit  ruled  in favor of AOL, citing Section 230.

“That’s the case that basically set out very expansive protection,” said Olivier Sylvain, a law professor at Fordham University. “It held that even when an intermediary, AOL in this case, knows about unlawful content … it still is not obliged under law to take that stuff down.”

That’s different from how the First Amendment treats other distributors, such as booksellers. But the legal protections aren’t limitless.

In 2008, the Ninth Circuit appeals court  ruled  that Roommates.com could not claim immunity from anti-discrimination laws for requiring users to choose the preferred traits of potential roommates. Section 230 was  further weakened  in 2018 when Trump  signed  a package of bills aimed at limiting online human trafficking.

The package created an exception that held websites liable for ads for prostitution. As a result, Craigslist  shut down  its section for personal ads and certain Reddit groups  were banned .

What reforms are being considered?

In 2020, following  a Trump executive order  on “preventing online censorship,” the Justice Department  published a review  of Section 230. In it, the department recommended that Congress revise the law to include carve-outs for “egregious content” related to child abuse, terrorism and cyber-stalking. The review also proposed revoking Section 230 immunity in cases where a platform had “actual knowledge or notice” that a piece of content was unlawful.

The Justice Department review came out the same day that Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo.,  introduced a bill  that  would require companies  to revise their terms of service to include a “duty of good faith” and more transparency about their moderation policies. A flurry of other Republican-led efforts came in January after  Twitter banned Trump  from its platform. Some proposals  would make  Section 230 protections conditional, while others  would repeal  the provision altogether.

Democrats have instead focused on reforming Section 230 to hold platforms accountable for harmful content like hate speech,  targeted harassment  and  drug dealing .  One proposal   would require  platforms to explain their moderation practices and to produce quarterly reports on content takedowns. The Senate Democrats’ SAFE Tech Act  would  revoke legal protections for platforms where payments are involved.

That last proposal is aimed at reining in online advertising abuses, but critics say even small changes to Section 230 could have unintended consequences for free speech on the internet. Still, experts say it’s time for change.

“Section 230 is a statute — it is not a constitutional norm, it’s not free speech — and it was written at a time when people were worried about electronic bulletin boards and newsgroups. They were not thinking about amplification, recommendations and targeted advertising,” Sylvain said. “Most people agree that the world in 1996 is not the world in 2021.”

The online world offers the promise of speech with minimal barriers and without borders. New technologies and widespread internet access have radically enhanced our ability to express ourselves; criticize those in power; gather and report the news; and make, adapt, and share creative works. Vulnerable communities have also found space to safely meet,  grow, and make themselves heard without being drowned out by the powerful. The ability to freely exchange ideas also benefits innovators, who can use all of their capabilities to build even better tools for their communities and the world.

In the U.S., the First Amendment grants individuals the right to speak without government interference. And globally, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) protects the right to speak both online and offline. Everyone should be able to take advantage of this promise. And no government should have the power to decide who gets to speak and who doesn’t.

Government threats to online speakers are significant. Laws and policies have enabled censorship regimes, controlled access to information, increased government surveillance, and minimized user security and safety.

At the same time, online speakers’ reliance on private companies that facilitate their speech has grown considerably. Online services’ content moderation decisions have far-reaching impacts on speakers around the world. This includes social media platforms and online sites selectively enforcing their Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and similar rules to censor dissenting voices and contentious ideas. That’s why these services must ground their moderation decisions in human rights and due process principles.

As the law and technology develops alongside our ever-evolving world, it’s important that these neither create nor reinforce obstacles to people’s ability to speak, organize, and advocate for change. Both the law and technology must enhance people’s ability to speak. I stand here today to deliver a succinct speech on technology and how it has greatly affected our lives. In today’s world of rising competition, technology plays a very crucial role in making our lives easy and comfortable. There is no doubt that it is the most significant component of our survival in today’s era.

Presently, each and every day, a novel application or software is being introduced in the economy that serves to enhance and uplift the lifestyle of the people in innumerable ways; hence making our lives better and full of smart components.

We use technology every day and everywhere in order to fulfil particular duties or our specific interests. The technology helps us in numerous ways from morning till evening. People from all the age groups benefit from technology until and unless they know how to access the same. But one must never forget that anything that comes to us has its own share of pros and cons.

There are multifarious benefits of technology. Technology has made communication much easier than ever before by the introduction of advanced and modified innovations of phones and applications. Not only in the professional world, but also in the household sphere, technology has contributed a lot. Most of the technology that we have around us is automatic as compared to the ones our parents had in their days. In the entertainment sector, we have more techniques to provide the audience with a real time experience. There are more games, better musical instruments, better visual systems like smart TV’s. Great success has been achieved in social networking by connecting millions of people at one go with the help of codes. The advanced technology in clinics and hospitals has reduced the errors made by surgeons; hence evolving the patient’s treatment.

Despite all these advantages there are some disadvantages as well, which have negatively affected the importance of technology. The biggest problem that has been witnessed is unemployment. Due to the over practice and much involvement of technology, the machinery has replaced human labour leading to unemployment in so many sectors. Certain physiological research teams have also proved that due to the presence of social applications like Whatsapp , Facebook and Twitter , etc the actual social isolation has increased leading to depression and increased loneliness cases amongst the youngsters. The increased dependency of humans on technology has even deteriorated the intelligence and creativity of children.

Our nation is a developing nation in the context of technology and science. So, we must know how to make wise utilisation of technology without creating hindrance in the growth of an individual, mentally as well as physically. At last, I would only say that it depends on us how much we choose to be dependent on technology because there is nothing in the world which comes easy; it’s our conscience which decides what we learn from the things that are provided to us.

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and Dear Fellow Students!

I am Namrata from Class 10, Section –A and your host for today’s event. I warmly welcome you all for assembling here. Before we begin the programme, I would like to speak on an extremely significant topic, i.e. “Technology”, as it has become a major part of our lives.

Advancement in Science and Technology in many spheres has without any doubt made our lives better than the earlier times. We cannot refute the fact that the life of each one of us is highly dependent on the scientific inventions and modern day technology.

It has bought an end to the wooden toys era and replaced the same with automatic cars. Its effect has been well observed in spheres like medicines, education, infrastructure, electricity, aviation, information, computer, metallurgy, physics, nuclear energy, space technology, defence research, biotechnology, household, sports, job, tourism, agriculture and numerous other fields as well.

Introduction of such technological strides, ideas and inventions to all these fields has brought a gigantic level of positive change in the current generation and thus, has provided them a variety of new and innovative opportunities. In India, technology has become the main source of the foundational and creative developments. It has improved and brought some huge developments in the Indian Economic status worldwide and has also created many new programmes for our new generation to grow in this technical world.

The maximum advantages have been seen in the educational sector. The more technological modifications, the better benefits it provides for students at several educational levels. For instance, since many students find the normal lectures boring and monotonous, the idea of smart classes makes them more engrossed in the same lectures that they earlier found boring.

There are also some people who are of the opinion that technology spoils a person by making him stoic and reducing his physical activities; thus increasing the chances of various health problems. This section of people supports the fact that the technological-based society offers a kind of silver spoon to people so much so that in the end they are unable to solve their problem on their own. This kind of dependency puts people in a horrifying condition where they are not at all self-reliant.

Other set of people who debate on this argument, believe that technology continues to be a very significant part of our society. They support the fact that it’s an indispensable part of our lives in the present scenario and will only help people for their betterment. It is immensely useful in providing the much needed knowledge to the students. All the great changes in varied arenas discussed above, have taken place due to the game changing contribution of technology. Further, this is a technical and cultural revolution.

But one thing we must not forget is that all the innovations are made to help us, not to make us the victim of the technological world. Now that we have a quick and easy access to the vast reservoir of knowledge through internet, we should make good use of it in order to solve the problems that we have around the world.

So students let us all take a pledge today to only make a fair use of technology for the realization of our goals and not making ourselves slaves of technology.

Good Evening Friends! I warmly welcome everyone to the speech ceremony of today.

I, Kartik Kaushik, am your host for today evening and would like to address the topic called technology. I am sure that we all can relate with technology without which we cannot imagine our lives. No matter wherever we go and whatever we do, technology has a sweeping influence over our lives. From the on and off of electric buttons to working in the kitchen with the appliances to going out in a car or any other vehicle – everything is governed by technology. Technology has gifted us so many things in life and thus we can safely say that it’s a boon for the mankind.

Technology plays a very significant role in satisfying our day to day needs. You just look around yourself and you will find everything from a small pen to a big airplane is borne out of technology. From sunrise until sunset, technology is what controls our lives. In fact, technological advancements have made our lives easier and we can perform tasks with a lot of ease and mush faster than ever before and hence can save our time.

It is not possible to do away with technology from our daily lives. Consider if the invention of airplane had not happened, then traveling from one place to the other or from one nation to the other would take considerably a long time. Take for instance, the field of medical science; the lives of many people have been saved due to technological advancements. In the absence of technology, our lives would have become powerless and regressive, so technology has improved our ways of living life.

However, some people believe that technology also brings disasters and its greatest example is war. War creates great bloodshed and takes away the lives of so many people using missiles and bombs. But the matter of fact is that when something goes wrong, we should not blame technology. For instance, when someone has used a knife to murder someone, we cannot put blame on the knife, but on the murderer who used that knife in order to kill someone. The other example can be based on the increasing rape cases. When teenagers sexually molest a girl, they do so after having watched a video on phone or a computer. It is not the fault of a cell phone or the internet, but it’s about the lack of moral principles in us and absence of strict regulation in our society which keeps a check on the downloading and uploading of such videos.

So when people don’t make wise use of technology, problem occurs and fault doesn’t lie with technology, but people who fail to observe morality. Solutions are required to fix these problems and there should be a proper surveillance system by the state and the government where wrong doers must be punished. Other than this, the concerned authority should keep a close watch on the unauthorized streaming of videos, which adversely impact our youth and leave a bad influence on them. Technology is a boon if used wisely and to the best interest of mankind.

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Fellow Students – Warm Greetings to one and all!

First let me introduce myself. I, Anand Ahuja from Class-VI (B), would like to take this opportunity and deliver a speech on technology. Technology has completely transformed our lives in every way – the way we manage our day to day lives at home, office, school or anywhere, while we are traveling, talking to somebody over phone, etc. With the advent of technology, our lives have been gifted with a lot many things so much so that technology dominates our lives every second.

Robots are our most advanced form of technology now the only thing that is left is to get inside the human body and target emotions and human blood. To an extent, technology has even conquered that space as well. In corporate, the use of cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, predictive analytics, machine learning and business intelligence devices, etc., are helping find new avenues to manage, operate and conduct business.

The increase in cloud storage, cloud computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence are such examples, which very soon will have a node to connect with our body and collect the data based on human activities in real time. Relentless development in technology has changed the lives of human both positively as well as negatively. The new inventions and boom in technology are due to our inherent curiosity, problem-solving skills and not to say the least creativity.

While giving birth to new technological inventions, we must also ensure that it should not only be human-friendly, but environmental friendly too. Technology should be like a flower for life and not a destroyer. Technology is present everywhere and deeply connected with our day to day lives. Technology can be called the king which rules over everything. But if human can cleverly manipulate the king, i.e. technology, through his knowledge and skills, then its bad effects can be controlled.

Technology is also greatly dominating the world of education and its learning methods as well. In the ancient times, it was not possible to get data, knowledge and information within fractions of seconds through internet. In fact, online schools have also emerged along with various online degree courses that help save people’s time from traveling to distant places. Now, people can gather information while sitting at one place through e-libraries and materials streaming online. It is indeed a positive move.

In fact, with the creation of machines and robots, the possibilities are such that they may even start giving training to people. Today, there are mobiles, computers, internet connection, video conferencing devices, social media and mobile applications in order to communicate with others from across the globe. It was not possible earlier. The advantage of change in communication is that it is easy, fast and quick way to communicate.

In the past where a letter used to take many days to reach a destination, like money order, personal letter or a greeting card, now they can be send within a few minutes time. Money can be transferred online through your mobile phone and greeting card can be mailed. This is what is called technology and its advantages cannot be simply summed up on finger tips.

So we should consider ourselves privileged that we are born during this time when technological advancements are flourishing and we are getting to enjoy the benefits and as far as its disadvantages are concerned it entirely depends on the human agency how the fruits of its benefits can be reaped and its use can be curtailed so that it doesn’t prove disastrous for the mankind.

Musk’s Starlink Defies Order to Block X in Brazil

The satellite internet service controlled by Elon Musk is refusing to comply with a court order to block his social network, X, regulators said.

Elon Musk is doubling down on his fight with the Brazilian authorities.

For weeks, the billionaire has refused to comply with Brazilian court orders to suspend certain accounts on his social network, X. He ignored fines and then fired X employees in Brazil so courts couldn’t hold them accountable. And then, after Brazil's Supreme Court ordered X blocked in the country, he suggested that Brazilians use software to circumvent the ban, despite the risk of large fines that a judge has threatened to impose for doing so.

Now he is defying the Brazilian government again. Starlink — the satellite-internet service controlled by Mr. Musk that has 250,000 customers in Brazil — told the country’s telecom agency on Sunday that it would not comply with orders to block X, the agency’s president said.

The retort further escalated a dispute that has already had consequences for millions of Brazilians and for Mr. Musk’s business — and it suggested that Mr. Musk is not prepared to back down anytime soon.

The move also illustrated the sheer power of Mr. Musk and his business empire. Having built or bought leading companies with increasing control over how people connect and communicate, Mr. Musk is trying to leverage that influence to confront authorities and challenge laws he does not like.

Mr. Musk, X and SpaceX, the Musk-controlled company that runs Starlink, did not respond to requests for comment.

Alexandre de Moraes , the Brazilian Supreme Court justice who has led the action against X, froze Starlink’s assets in Brazil last week and blocked it from carrying out transactions in the country. He did so to try to collect on more than $3 million in fines against X for ignoring his orders to suspend accounts. Justice Moraes has accused X of spreading disinformation and hate speech.

Digital scams are as old as the Internet itself. But the new-wave deepfakes featuring Musk emerged last year after sophisticated AI tools were released to the public, allowing anyone to clone celebrity voices or manipulate videos with eerie accuracy. — Reuters

All Steve Beauchamp wanted was money for his family. And he thought Elon Musk could help. Beauchamp, an 82-year-old retiree, saw a video late last year of Musk endorsing a radical investment opportunity that promised rapid returns.

He contacted the company behind the pitch and opened an account for US$248. Through a series of transactions over several weeks, Beauchamp drained his retirement account, ultimately investing more than US$690,000. Then the money vanished – lost to digital scammers on the forefront of a new criminal enterprise powered by artificial intelligence.

The scammers had edited a genuine interview with Musk, replacing his voice with a replica using AI tools. The AI was sophisticated enough that it could alter minute mouth movements to match the new script they had written for the digital fake. To a casual viewer, the manipulation might have been imperceptible.

“I mean, the picture of him – it was him,” Beauchamp said about the video he saw of Musk. “Now, whether it was AI making him say the things that he was saying, I really don’t know. But as far as the picture, if somebody had said, ‘Pick him out of a lineup’, that’s him.”

Thousands of these AI-driven videos, known as deepfakes, have flooded the internet in recent months, featuring phony versions of Musk deceiving scores of would-be investors. AI-powered deepfakes are expected to contribute to billions of dollars in fraud losses each year, according to estimates from Deloitte.

The videos cost just a few dollars to produce and can be made in minutes. They are promoted on social media, including in paid ads on Facebook, magnifying their reach.

“It’s probably the biggest deepfake-driven scam ever,” said Francesco Cavalli, the co-founder and chief of threat intelligence at Sensity, a company that monitors and detects deepfakes.

The videos are often eerily lifelike, capturing Musk’s iconic stilted cadence and South African accent.

Scammers will often start with a genuine video. Musk’s mouth movements are then edited with lip-syncing technology, which tweaks how someone speaks. Scammers will add an AI voice using voice-cloning tools, which copies any voice from sample clips.

The final ad, which can include fake graphics mimicking news organizations, can be quite convincing for casual internet users.

Musk has been by far the most common spokesperson in the deepfake scam videos, according to Sensity, which analyzed more than 2,000 clips. Musk was featured in nearly a quarter of all deepfake scams since late last year, Sensity found. He was featured in nearly 90% of the videos focused on cryptocurrencies.

Musk did not respond to requests for comment.

Deepfake ads have also featured Warren Buffett, the prominent investor, and Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, among others.

It is difficult to quantify exactly how many deepfakes are floating online, but a search of Facebook’s ad library for commonly used language that advertised the scams uncovered hundreds of thousands of ads, many of which included the deepfake videos. Although Facebook has already taken down many of them for violating its policies and disabled some of the accounts that were responsible, other videos remained online, and more seemed to appear each day.

YouTube has also been flooded with the fakes, often using a label that suggests the video is “live.” In fact, the videos are prerecorded deepfakes.

After former US President Donald Trump spoke at a recent bitcoin conference, YouTube hosted dozens of videos using the “live” label that showed a prerecorded deepfake version of Musk saying he would personally double any cryptocurrency sent to his account. Some of the videos had hundreds of thousands of viewers, though YouTube said scammers can use bots to artificially inflate the number.

One Texan said he lost US$36,000 worth of bitcoin after seeing an “impersonation” of Musk speaking on a so-called live YouTube video in February 2023, according to a report with the Better Business Bureau, the nonprofit consumer advocacy group.

“I send my bitcoin, and never got anything back,” the person wrote.

YouTube said in a statement that it had removed more than 15.7 million channels and more than 8.2 million videos for violating its guidelines from January to March of this year, with most of those violating its policies against spam.

The prevalence of the phony ads prompted Andrew Forrest, an Australian billionaire whose videos were also used to create deepfake ads on Facebook, to file a lawsuit against Meta, its parent company, for negligence in how its ad business is run. He claimed that Facebook’s advertising business lured “innocent users into bad investments.”

Meta, which owns Facebook, said the company was training automated detection systems to catch fraud on its platform but also described a cat-and-mouse game where well-funded scammers constantly shifted their tactics to evade detection.

YouTube pointed to its policies prohibiting scams and manipulated videos. The company in March made it a requirement that creators disclose when they use AI to create realistic content.

The internet is now rife with similar reports from people scammed out of thousands of dollars, some of them losing their life savings. Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission issued a warning in May about scams featuring Musk. Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI warned Americans that AI-powered cybercrime and deepfake scams were on the rise.

“Criminals are leveraging AI as a force multiplier” in ways that make “cyberattacks and other criminal activity more effective and harder to detect,” the FBI said in an emailed statement.

Digital scams are as old as the Internet itself. But the new-wave deepfakes featuring Musk emerged last year after sophisticated AI tools were released to the public, allowing anyone to clone celebrity voices or manipulate videos with eerie accuracy. Pornographers, meme-makers and, increasingly, scammers took notice.

“It’s shifting now because organised crime has figured out, ‘We can make money at this’,” according to Lou Steinberg, the founder of CTM Insights, a cybersecurity research lab. “So we’re going to see more and more of these fake attempts to separate you from your money.”

The AI-generated videos are hardly perfect. Musk can sound robotic in some videos, and his mouth does not always line up with his words. But they appear convincing enough for some targets of the scam – and are improving all the time, experts said.

Such videos cost as little as US$10 to create, according to Cavalli from Sensity. The scammers – based mostly in India, Russia, China and Eastern Europe – cobble together the fake videos using a mix of free and cheap tools in less than 10 minutes.

“It works,” Cavalli said. “So they’ll keep amplifying the campaign, across countries, translating into multiple languages, and continuously spreading the scam to even more targets.”

Some of the scams often advertise phony AI-powered software, with claims that they can produce incredible returns on an investment. Targets are encouraged to send a small sum at first – about US$250 – and are slowly lured into investing more as scammers claim that the initial investment is increasing in value.

Experts who have studied crypto communities said Musk’s unique global fan base of conservatives, anti-establishment types and crypto enthusiasts are often drawn to alternative paths for earning their fortunes – making them perfect targets for the scams. In one video, taken from a shareholder meeting at Tesla, the deepfake Musk explains a product for automated trading powered by AI that can double a given investment each day.

“There’s definitely a group of people who believe that the secret to wealth is being hidden from them,” said Molly White, a researcher who has studied crypto communities. They think that “if they can find the secret to it, then that’s all they need.”

Scammers often target older Internet users who may be familiar with cryptocurrency, AI or Musk but unfamiliar with the safest ways to invest.

“The elderly have always been a very scammable, profitable population,” said Finn Brunton, a professor of science and technology studies at the University of California, Davis, who is an expert in the crypto market. He added that the elderly had been targets of fraud long before platforms like Facebook made them easier to scam.

Beauchamp, who is a widower and worked until he was 75 as a sales representative at a company in Canada, came across an ad shortly after joining Facebook in 2023. Although he remembers seeing the video live on CNN, a spokesperson for CNN said Musk had not appeared for an interview in years. ( The New York Times could not identify a video matching Beauchamp’s description, but he said his story was nearly identical to that of another woman scammed online by a deepfaked Musk.)

He sent US$27,216 last December to a company calling itself Magna-FX, according to emails between Beauchamp and the company that were shared with the Times. Magna-FX made it seem like his investment was increasing in value. At one point, a sales agent used software to take control of Beauchamp’s computer, moving funds around to apparently invest them.

To withdraw the money, Beauchamp was told to pay a US$3,500 administration fee and another US$3,500 commission fee. He sent the money only to be told that he needed to pay US$20,000 to release a portion of the funds – about US$200,000. He paid that, too.

Although Beauchamp told the scammers that he had exhausted his retirement savings, maxed out his credit cards, tapped a line of credit and borrowed money from his sister to invest and pay the fees, the scammers wanted more. They asked him to pay yet another fee. Beauchamp contacted police.

Most traces of Magna-FX were taken offline, including the company website, phone number and email addresses used by the agents Beauchamp spoke with. Another company bearing a nearly identical name and advertising similar services did not respond to requests for comment.

“I guess now is the time to call me dumb, stupid, idiot and what other superlatives you can think of,” Beauchamp wrote in a report filed to the Better Business Bureau.

Beauchamp said he was managing to pay his bills using a smaller retirement account that he had not shared with the scammers, along with his pensions. He had planned to travel the world during his retirement.

Beauchamp filed a report with the local police, but little movement has been made on the case, he said.

“Because of the amount of fraud that is going on everywhere, my case got put in a queue,” he said. “I’m not getting my hopes up.” – The New York Times

INATEL's campus in Santa Rita do Sapucaí: leading 6G research in Brazil

In the small Brazilian town of Santa Rita do Sapucaí, a rather large campus towers over an avenue lined with local shops, grocery stores, schools and simple homes. This is the National Institute of Telecommunications (INATEL), the main organization in the country where cutting-edge research on 6G connectivity is taking place.

Founded as the first telecommunications engineering school in Latin America, INATEL is the epicenter of Brazil's "Electronics Valley" and is nearing its 60th anniversary. It was established during a time when major telecommunications companies like Rede Globo and Embratel were being created, with a mission to provide skilled professionals to a burgeoning industry.

Now, the institute is setting its sights on evolving as a valuable partner to corporations, as well as remaining a destination for those wanting to pursue careers in telecommunications. Over the years, it has grown beyond research to also provide services to companies. This interaction between the school and the market has led to solutions in areas such as digital television, directly supporting the development of a range of local equipment manufacturers.

"Over the years, we have evolved from a purely academic institution to one that also engages in research, consulting, and corporate training, leveraging the knowledge generated from our research programs," says Carlos Nazareth, director at INATEL, in an exclusive interview with Forbes.

Today, INATEL offers seven undergraduate engineering programs, as well as a master's and doctoral program in telecommunications. This combination of education and research has allowed INATEL to develop strong partnerships with major technology companies like Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, and various telecom operators.

"Through these collaborations, we have been able to develop innovative solutions in areas like 5G, the Internet of Things, and automation control, which we then transfer to the market," says Nazareth.

Accelerating 'Internet of Senses' Research

One of INATEL's key achievements is the development of the first 5G radio with entirely Brazilian technology. The project had the support of the National Education and Research Network (RNP), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Cisco. The technology has been recently transferred to Trivale tecnologia, a national company, for use in the oil and gas, agriculture, and mining sectors.

Now, the institute is focused on the next generation of mobile connectivity. The key differences between 5G and 6G, according to Nazareth, are the ability of 6G to integrate the physical and biological worlds with the digital world. "The aim is to further reduce latency and unify all network types, including terrestrial and satellite," he adds.

Beyond its educational programs, INATEL's focus on connectivity research is noteworthy: the institute has established a 5G and 6G Competence Center, supported by the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation (EMBRAPII), and MCTI to develop solutions for these next-generation networks.

Looking to the future, the institute is exploring a wide range of applications that can benefit from advanced connectivity. According to INATEL's director, these include remote medical diagnostics, precision agriculture, and industrial automation.

The institute is also working on developing "internet of senses" technologies that can capture and transmit tactile, olfactory, and other sensory information, opening up new possibilities in fields like telemedicine and virtual experiences.

According to Nazareth, the technology is expected to reach the market by 2030. INATEL's research in this field is already in its third phase, supported by a BRL 100 million ($17 million) investment.

"[Internet of senses technologies] could enable advancements such as feeling the texture of clothing before buying online or a doctor performing surgery remotely with real-time tactile feedback," says Nazareth.

The combination of 6G with artificial intelligence and quantum computing will further accelerate innovations, Nazareth says, adding that will offer unprecedented personalization of products and services. "Satellite networks and unmanned aircraft will also ensure global connectivity, even in remote areas. The potential is enormous," he says.

Catching Up with the World and Tackling the Skills Gap

In terms of INATEL's position compared to other research centers, Nazareth notes that Brazil has historically lagged in the adoption of new telecom technologies. However, the institute has been catching up in recent generations of mobile technology, entering the 5G research space in 2015 and now aiming to be on par with international efforts in 6G.

"We have established partnerships with universities in Finland, Spain, Germany, and the UK to accelerate our research work," Nazareth says.

INATEL has big plans for the future, but there are challenges of a local nature on the horizon. While the institute has made significant strides in its research and development efforts, it needs to attract and retain more talented engineers and researchers to support its agenda.

Only 6% of Brazilian youth choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers, compared to much higher percentages in other countries. Additionally, the small pool of local professionals available often ends up being hired by international employers without having to leave Brazil, which also adds to the problem.

However, the institute's head remains upbeat and says that investing in quality education and showcasing the competence of Brazilian engineering can help the country become a valuable partner for global technology companies.

"We are focused on expanding our educational programs and collaborating with industry partners to create more opportunities for students and researchers," Nazareth concludes.
