Find your PhD position in Germany

Before you start your search ....

Before you start your search you should know that there are different PhD models:

  • Individual doctorate  or
  • Structured PhD programmes

What's the difference? Check out our  overview of the various ways to do your PhD in Germany

Find your individual doctorate

Two young researchers are sitting on a lab desk listening to a standing professor and taking notes. The professor holds a molecular model in his hands.

The "traditional" or "individual" path to a PhD remains the most common in Germany. An individual doctorate involves a thesis or dissertation that is produced under the  supervision of one professor . This form of PhD study offers a great deal of  flexibility , but demands a high degree of  personal initiative  and responsibility.

How to find your PhD supervisor

In Germany there is no central admissions or selection office for doctoral students. Therefore, your first step is to find a suitable professor who is willing to be your supervisor.

One way to find a supervisor is to look for a university institute that matches your area of research. The following online search engines might help you find a suitable supervisor:

  • GERiT – German research institutions GERiT is a website containing information on approximately 29,000 research institutions in Germany. GERiT allows the user to search easily by location or subject. It provides all the information needed to choose an institution at which to research, study or do a doctorate. www.gerit.org
  • Finding a PhD position PhDGermany publishes PhD openings in Germany that specifically target international applicants. Accordingly, in most cases the working language is English. Fluent knowledge of German is only required for certain special positions. PhDGermany helps you find the right PhD opening or supervisor for your doctoral thesis and assists you with the online application process. www.phdgermany.de
  • Higher Education Compass   This database provides up-to-date information from universities about doctoral opportunities in Germany. The search engine enables you to carry out targeted searches on the basis of departments, admission requirements and form of doctoral thesis. www.higher-education-compass.de

Furthermore,  your contacts with your professors or previous university  could help direct you to a suitable department or potential supervisor in Germany.

It is also helpful to attend  academic conferences  in your own subject area. There you will be able to exchange information and make contacts – and perhaps even find a future PhD supervisor.

Find your structured PhD programme

Students are sitting in a modern study hall on red chairs at grey desks.

DAAD/Ausserhofer/Himsel

Structured PhD programmes in Germany are frequently very similar to the PhD programmes in English-speaking countries, in which a  team of supervisors  look after a  group of doctoral students . Around 12,000 doctoral students from abroad – roughly one in four – do their PhDs in structured programmes. As a rule, it is possible to complete a doctorate in four to five years.

Where to find your PhD programme

There is no central database of all structured PhD programmes in Germany. You can usually find these programmes directly through the respective universities, graduate schools or non-university research institutions. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) database is also a good place to look. Here you will find a large number of PhD programmes that are specially aimed at international doctoral students.

International doctoral programme database

Are you interested in an international doctoral programme in Germany? This DAAD database presents a selection of roughly 230 international doctoral programmes in Germany. The database can be searched according to different criteria.  www.daad.de/international-programmes

Doctoral programmes at universities

Many universities offer structured doctoral programmes, which they publicise on their websites. The Student Advisory Service or Graduate Centre at the respective university will also provide help here. You can find the relevant addresses using the Higher Education Compass provided by the German Rectors’ Conference. www.higher-education-compass.de

DFG-funded research training groups

Research training groups are also funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) for a period of up to nine years. Their key emphasis is on the qualification of doctoral researchers within the framework of a focused research programme and a structured training strategy. www.dfg.de > Current Research Training Groups

Helmholtz Research Schools, Colleges and Graduate Schools

The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation. In collaboration with various institutions of higher education, Helmholtz Association research centres have established structured PhD programmes under the auspices of Helmholtz Graduate Schools, Helmholtz Research Schools and Colleges.  www.helmholtz.de > PhD Candidates

Leibniz Graduate Schools

The Leibniz Association connects 97 research institutes that conduct problem-oriented research and provide scientific infrastructure of national and international importance. Together with universities they run structured PhD programmes in Leibniz Graduate Schools. www.leibniz-association.eu > Leibniz Graduate Schools

International Max Planck Research Schools

The Max Planck Society specialises in innovative basic research and its institutes are able to offer up-and-coming researchers excellent infrastructure and support. The website lists the programmes available at International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS):  www.mpg.de > International Max Planck Research Schools

Max Planck Schools

In Germany, the best researchers in a specific field are often work at different universities and non-university research institutions spread throughout the country. The Max Planck Schools serve as hubs which gather this distributed knowledge. Here, the brightest minds in their fields have come together from within the scientific community to interconnect in faculties made up of active researchers. Students gain access to these unique networks, learn in close personal exchange from leaders in their fields and their peers, and enjoy access to outstanding infrastructure. Currently, three Schools are operating in the fields of Cognition, Matter to Life, and Photonics. www.maxplanckschools.de

Where can I find out about requirements?

Application procedures  differ from programme to programme . The precise requirements and deadlines can be found on the website of the respective university, research training group or graduate school. You should therefore first choose a PhD programme and/or graduate school.

Prestigious German Design Award "Upcycling Guitar" Concept Models and "e-plegona" Selected for Design Concept Discipline of Red Dot Award

Yamaha Corporation announces that two of its designs were selected to receive the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2024: namely, the "Upcycling Guitar" electric guitar concept models, and the "e-plegona" experiential installation, which was developed in collaboration with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.

reddot winner 2024

The Red Dot Design Award is a German design award hosted by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen that is highly respected around the world and comprises three categories: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept.

Three Yamaha products were already selected for the Product Design discipline*1 earlier this year.

The Design Concept discipline was established to celebrate new design concepts and innovations, the precursors of tomorrow's great products, from varying stages of development. These new wins bring Yamaha's total number of Design Concept awards to three, following the 2017 selection of the &Y01 electrically power-assisted wheelchair that performs music, also designed in collaboration with Yamaha Motor.

Product Overview

"upcycling guitar" concept models.

Concept model electric guitars designed as part of a project that seeks to create new instruments by upcycling*2 unused materials*3 left over from musical instrument manufacturing processes, imbuing the materials with new value and restoring their appeal. The Model "Marimba" is made from rosewood, used for marimba tone bars, and the Model "Piano" is made from unused piano materials, such as spruce, birch, and maple. Both musical instruments take full advantage of the characteristics of the wood used.

"e-plegona" Installation

The "e-plegona" is an installation created by the design departments of Yamaha and Yamaha Motor, in collaboration with research partner Dr. Mark Changizi and the Shinsuke Shimojo Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, based on their research into Kando experiences, which involve simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement.

The installation has two people experience it at the same time, with players repeatedly communicating to each other through non-verbal and intuitive means.

Based on the results of our unique research combining science and art, conducted together with our research partners, this experimental prototype artificially stirs the emotions with non-verbal, intuitive communication to produce a connected vibe between people, like that felt during jazz improvisation—or the same sense of connection people often feel toward musical instruments or motorcycles—in order to simulate experiences of Kando.

In 2023, the installation was jointly exhibited at the South by Southwest 2023 festival for cutting-edge technologies in Austin, Texas, USA, and also at hub.berlin, one of Europe's foremost technology events, and the Tech Open Air Festival, a technology conference focused on innovation, both in Berlin, Germany.

PhD and Early Career Conference | Popular Culture and Democracy: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward

Call for Papers | PhD and Early Career Conference

“Popular Culture and Democracy: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward” University of Freiburg, Germany | October 24-26, 2024

Deadline for Submission: July 31, 2024

In 2024, nearly half of the world’s population heads to the polls. State elections in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and numerous other countries will have wide-reaching global consequences. In many places, these elections take place within a landscape in which democracy is threatened, raising questions about the perception and meaning of democratic values against divided voices and worldviews. Russ Castronovo and Dana D. Nelson call for a return to democracy as a political term [i], stressing the importance of analyzing what democracy means and how institutions relate to it. Popular culture facilitates interactions with and representations of democracy through its broad accessibility and mainstream appeal. It therefore offers a plethora of venues to explore how individuals, audiences, industries, and institutions engage with democracy through such diverse objects and mediums as social media platforms, movies, video games, or podcasts. Thus, against the backdrop of the current democratic and anti-democratic developments in the English-speaking world, these interactions present both opportunities and challenges which offer grounds for important academic exploration.

Products and mediums of popular culture influence and are shaped by the discussions surrounding democracy. Popular culture enables a “democracy of enjoyment”, as John Storey explains [ii]. It not only appeals to the masses but is also characterized by immediacy which allows strong connections with audiences. In addition, it facilitates widespread distribution and participation in democratic discourses. Popular culture both struggles with institutions and individuals pushing for certain ideals while also encompassing subversive and “political potential” [iii]. Whether it be fictional and non-fictional politicians featured in television shows, pop songs perpetuating political ideologies, activists  using online  spaces to critique democratic injustices, or sports stars taking a political stance – popular culture both impacts and is influenced by how its consumers think about and interreact with democracy and democratic practices. These intersections of popular culture and democracy can have lasting negative consequences as well as resounding positive effects. As popular culture engages the civic imagination and fosters a continuous exchange of ideas, representations, and power, it extends its influence on diverse critical areas such as climate change activism, labor rights, the ‘culture war’, and identity politics.

The conference “Popular Culture and Democracy”, organized by PhD candidates in British and North American literary and cultural studies at the University of Freiburg, Germany, warmly welcomes interdisciplinary approaches and contributions on topics targeting the connection of popular culture and democracy in the English-speaking world. Papers can include topics on specific popular culture products and mediums, or a particular approach to the topic from postcolonial studies, gender studies, queer studies, political theory and other perspectives.

We invite proposals for individual papers, on topics that can include, but are not limited to:

  • The intersection of populism and popular culture
  • Popular culture, conspiracy theories, and anti-democratic sentiments
  • Heroes / villains in popular culture and their relationship with democratic structures
  • Post- & De-colonial approaches and representations of BIPOC rights in popular culture
  • Representations of Indigeneity and Indigenous sovereignty in popular culture
  • Images of (in)justice, political activism, and resistance in popular culture
  • (Anti-)democratic ideologies in, for example, popular music or video games
  • Representations of legal frameworks within the popular culture landscape
  • Social media platforms and democracy
  • Utopian / dystopian projections of democracy’s future in popular culture
  • Popular culture’s representation of natural disasters or pandemics, and their underlying political agenda
  • Genre-specific representations of democracy, e.g. in horror, comedy, or science fiction

Please send proposals of no more than 300 words and a 50-word biography to [email protected] by July 31, 2024 . Speakers will be notified in the first half of August. For up-to-date information, please check the conference website .

The conference will be held in person. We offer a travel bursary and accommodation to all confirmed speakers. Early career researchers associated with international universities are especially encouraged to submit a proposal.

Leaked iPhone 16 case video may show off the new design for 2024

Some changes coming

iPhone 15 front angled

Now that we've heard everything about the iOS 18 upgrade coming later this year, we can turn our attention back to the hardware – and the design of the iPhone 16 flagship due in September has leaked again, this time through what seems to be a case mold.

A short video of this clip was posted to social media by @UniverseIce , who is one of the more reliable tipsters out there. Nothing is official until Apple confirms it. but this does match up with previous leaks we've seen.

It appears we're looking at a case template for either the iPhone 16 or the iPhone 16 Plus , as it's quite tricky to judge the size from this quick clip. It's most probably the larger model, but it might be the standard one.

There's still some debate over the screen size the iPhone 16 Plus is going to come with, and from what we're heard so far, every iPhone model could be changing its screen size this year – perhaps up to 6.9 inches with the iPhone 16 Pro Max .

Cameras and buttons

pic.twitter.com/nLp6IrevOe June 22, 2024

Whether this case mold is for the iPhone 16 or the iPhone 16 Plus, both phones are expected to sport the same design – the only difference between the two handsets should be the screen size and configuration, the dimensions, and the battery capacity.

You can see here the vertical camera alignment that's been previously rumored : it'll be a change from the diagonal arrangement on the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus, and it's apparently going to enable the new versions to record spatial photos and videos.

There also seems to be room here for the new Capture button that's supposedly coming to all the iPhone 16 models this year. If the rumors are true, the new button will give users more control over how photos and videos are taken.

No doubt the rumors and leaks are going to continue between now and September, when another four iPhones are expected to launch – and they should come with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence on board.

A Rubens Returns to a German Castle, 80 Years After It Was Stolen

The oil painting of a saint, looted from the castle in the closing weeks of World War II by the ducal family that once owned it, is being returned by a Buffalo museum.

A painting showing a bishop and an angel in conflict with a demon.

By Catherine Hickley

Among the most valuable art treasures once held at Friedenstein Castle, a vast baroque palace in eastern Germany, was a series of five oil sketches depicting saints by Peter Paul Rubens that disappeared at the end of World War II.

The castle had long been the home of the dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , a duchy that lost its powers, titles and much of its land after the 1918 revolution in Germany. The palace complex then became a public museum, filled with the art once owned by the ducal family and operated by an independent foundation.

But representatives of the ducal family returned to the castle in 1945 as American and Soviet forces closed in on the city of Gotha.

According to experts, truckloads of the most valuable art were removed by the family in the last weeks of the war, including three of the five Rubens oil sketches, which were later sold on the market.

One of those sketches, which depicts “St. Gregory of Nazianzus,” is now being returned to the castle and the foundation that operates it by a museum in Buffalo that bought it from a New York gallery in 1952. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, a successor to the city’s Albright Art Gallery, did not know the work had been misappropriated and illicitly sold, and will receive compensation for the work, under a negotiated agreement, according to a statement from the parties involved in the settlement.

“I am delighted,” said Tobias Pfeifer-Helke, the director of the foundation that oversees Friedenstein Castle’s museums. “Our goal is to restore the historic integrity of the collection — especially its core works, these five Rubens sketches which belong together as a series.”
