Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention for Youth

Event details listed next to a graphic of words related to suicide cut out in overlapping red, orange, and green distressed rectangles with the word suicide large in the center

In-Person Workshop Friday, September 20, 2024 2:00-4:00pm

Nyu silver school of social work, 1 washington square north, parlor, new york, ny 10003.

NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2 CE contact hours

Clinicians know all-too-well that suicidal ideation is commonplace in school-aged youth. It is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 12-18 (CDC, 2022). There has been a significant rise in adolescent mental health hospitalization since the start of COVID-19. Studies have found that adolescent suicidal ideation and attempts may be a reaction to stress or emotional distress (Tummala-Narra, Deshpande and Kaur, 2016) and the current climate intensifies these emotions leading to suicidal ideation and attempts. Studies have also found that the rate for suicide attempts have increased for youth in Black, Latinx and Asian/Pacific Islander communities (Ramchand et al, 2021). Newspapers report that the “next wave” of the pandemic is issues in child mental health (US News and World Report, 2021). Clinicians see this “next wave” daily.

This workshop will teach clinicians how to properly assess for suicidal ideation, learn when the level of suicidal ideation requires further assessment in a hospital setting and will address all of this with a culturally affirming lens. Many times white clinicians (or clinicians without shared ethnicity to their clients) are sole practitioners in schools with BIPOC students, and we will work to address social location and the proper tools to use to assess suicidal ideation with BIPOC students. We will also use tools to manage long-term suicidal ideation without hospitalization. Finally, we will address school reintegration with high-risk youth, all with a collaborative frame. The presenter will normalize the assessment process so that clinicians bring conversations about suicidal ideation into their daily practice with youth.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this workshop, students will be able to:

  • Understand the new levels of suicidal ideation in BIPOC youth and reintegration into school through a culturally affirming lens.
  • Have current step-by-step training on suicide assessment, hospitalization, reintegration post-hospitalization, and collaborative care with school staff, administration, inpatient clinicians and the family/guardians.
  • Reflect on case examples and learn the different levels of interventions ranging from making a referral to a therapist to calling 911.
  • Normalize conversations about suicide assessment and risk to bring this into daily practice.

Uplifting 2SLGBTQ+ Communities

Driven by passion and personal experiences our researchers are addressing issues that affect 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

Laurier’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and field education. Our programs are ideally located in the heart of downtown Kitchener and Brantford, Ontario – embedding our students close to the social service agencies with which they work.

We offer social work programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. Our newest Bachelor of Social Work program, located at Laurier’s Brantford campus, offers a generalist degree with a unique focus on Indigenous issues.

The Master of Social Work program has an overarching framework of social justice, equity, inclusivity and reflexivity, and provides students flexibility in choosing the direction of their learning in micro and/or macro social work practice. The Indigenous Field of Study in the MSW program is rooted in a wholistic Indigenous worldview and includes the use of Indigenous elders, a traditional circle process and Indigenous ceremonies.

The Social Work PhD program provides students with opportunities for advanced scholarship and professional growth. The program is designed to lead students into leadership roles in social work in postsecondary education and in policy, and to lead students to research and specialized practice in governmental and human service organizations.

Field Education

As part of the Social Work program, you will be required to complete two field education placements which bring what you are learning in the classroom to the workplace and develop your professional identity as a social worker.

The field education placements are conceptualized as an educational course rather than a work term. That is, courses are graded (pass/fail) by an agency-based qualified field instructor assigned to teach each student, and a field advisor is assigned to support each student and instructor. The workload of field education is controlled to facilitate an emphasis on learning.

You will complete two field placements as part of SK399: Field 1 (360 hours in 12 weeks) and SK499: Field 2 (360 hours in 12 weeks) for a total of 720 hours of field work. You must pass both of these field experiences in order to graduate from the Social Work program.

Where do I complete my field placements?

How am i assigned to a placement.

You view a large list of available placement opportunities and rank your top ten in order of preference.  You are able to meet 1:1 with a field team member to review your choices and ensure your goals and needs for placement are met.  You are matched to one site based on multiple variables.  The main goal for the field team is to ensure each student has the most beneficial learning experience possible, based on the available options, goals and needs of the student and of the site.

When do field education courses take place?

The timelines for field education courses are structured and sequenced to reflect course requirements and program progression. The following timelines also ensure that you attend the required seminars and workshops that are part of the field education course, and that you complete your program requirements in a timely manner.

Field education course timelines:

  • Type of placement: fall, winter and spring term, four days a week.
  • Days: Tuesday to Friday.
  • Months: January to April or April to July or September to December.
  • Time in placement: 360 hours of placement; 30 hours per week.

Who evaluates the field education courses?

Professional and qualified instructors teach you in the field. Field education instructors typically hold a minimum of a BSW degree and are recognized as “our faculty in the field.” Instructors have a minimum of two-years post-degree experience as well as formal training.

What are the costs associated with placements?

Field education courses are covered under student fees. There are no extra charges through the university. However, while on placement, you are usually expected to pay for expenses such as police checks, mileage and parking. Students and instructors are not paid.

Placement agencies may cover your mileage costs while on agency business; however, this varies with agencies.

"I chose Laurier for the Bachelor of Social Work program because I felt it was unique in comparison to other social work programs. Our program offers experiential learning opportunities and smaller class sizes that foster an environment of connection and community-building. A highlighting factor in my decision to apply here was my positive experience communicating with Laurier staff and faculty."
