Researchers recently conducted a review of 153 academic articles examining how working a nonstandard schedule affects employee attitudes, behavior, physical and psychological health, as well as their personal and family life. Their review prompts four questions employers should consider as they begin to rethink their schedules: 1) How does my organization’s scheduling practices affect employee well-being? For example, night shifts are associated with higher absenteeism and lower productivity while flextime schedules are generally associated with reduced absenteeism and turnover; 2) Can we better align our work schedules with the needs of our employees? Person-schedule fit, or finding the right hours for the right person, is an important factor to consider when contemplating a post-pandemic strategy; 3) What are the implications of giving employees more control over their schedules? It is possible to create schedules that are idiosyncratic and customized to meet the needs and desires of individual employees; 4) Can we effectively balance the needs and desires of both the organization and employees? The key will be finding a balance between the long term benefits their scheduling strategy brings to both employees and the organization.

Most nights, I sit at the kitchen table, usually around midnight, crying over college pre-cal. I can’t even begin to express the number of hours I put into school from the moment I wake up until the moment my head hits the pillow. If you know me, I’m always putting school before friends, mental health, and even family sometimes. Whether it’s simply stress, an illness, or a tough point in our lives, we all struggle. It can sometimes be difficult to balance mounds of school work, while having time for yourself. To help find that balance, I decided to prioritize my school day, find time saving opportunities, use a schedule with assigned tasks, and dedicate a space to help destress and study.

Keeping that goal in mind, I had to structure out my weeks. I started by writing down all the tasks, including study time into my planner when I think of it. I believe a planner is an essential item in keeping track of deadlines and assignments. 

After identifying assignments and deadlines, I wanted to seek time saving opportunities. If I spent all my time on smaller projects rather than the final, things aren’t going to work in my favor. I had to prioritize things by asking myself “If I could do only one of these things, which would be more important?” During classes I would always tell myself that I’ll just finish it later at home, which in the end gave me loads of unnecessary homework. I began to utilize my class time, and any off period I had to get as much school work done to save myself more time after school. By doing this, it saved me about an hour to put towards something more important. I also had to cut out the amount of time spent on my phone as it’s very easy for me to get distracted from homework. To help counteract this I would silence my phone and leave it in another room, so I wasn’t tempted to get on it. For instance, I know that next week I have a pre-cal quiz, so I need to dedicate about an hour the night before to study. I can’t hold off other assignments to do on that night as well.

After that, I identified and listed the amount of time required to complete each task, and if certain tasks could be completed during the same time frame. For example, If I have a pre-cal quiz the next day, I can also complete the homework for that lesson and count it towards my time studying.

Now that my school schedule has been broken down, I had to incorporate any plans that I might want to make out of school. In particular, if I want to go and hang out with my friends one night after school this week, I need to arrange how long I’ll be out and when I will have time to complete the homework. In this case, I would usually get as much tackled before dinner so I’m not left with a lot after I get home from enjoying myself.

Finally, I had to set aside a dedicated quiet space for me to study and do work in. I work best in quiet conditions so it was important to establish a place I work best in, which is the comfort of my own bed. Some people like going to coffee shops as it’s quiet with a peaceful aroma, however I don’t find comfort in public places. Like a lot of people, siblings and family can tend to be a little noisy, which can sometimes distract me from focusing. To resolve this, I explained to them what I was trying to get done, and if they wouldn’t mind keeping things a bit quieter. At times, I’ll even play soft calming music to help me relax and get focused.

Establishing that balance between school and down time is vital for improving your mental health. Completing those five steps of identifying tasks, finding time saving opportunities, assigning blocks of time for each task, incorporating non school related activities, and dedicating a space to study will help relieve stress and give me a will to live.

Establishing a weekly study schedule is of great value for students who wish to achieve the highest learning outcomes. This is due to the fact that the organization of their own activities contributes to an increase in the level of concentration and productivity, which will allow them to perform the tasks assigned to students efficiently and successfully. Moreover, drawing up a work plan and preparation for a particular task provides an opportunity to improve an individual’s organizational skills and give awareness of what time of day they work most effectively.

I will be able to use my completed study calendar to prepare for this and next week’s assignments. Thus, I will be able to gain a clear understanding of how I can use my time most effectively and allocate it so as to achieve the most successful educational outcomes and gain as much knowledge as possible. Research pointed out that “the study plan will help you split your studying into bite-sized chunks and outlining what you need to do every day will help you know exactly what you need to do and when” (Gogoi, 2022, para. 4). Therefore, I was able to conclude that the most comfortable hours to fulfill the plan set before me was the early evening.

Invention Strategies are of particular value when the student is faced with the task of narrowing down the topic chosen. It is worth noting that there are many approaches of this kind; however, the clustering method was selected for this work. This choice is due to the fact that it provides an opportunity to think about various aspects of the desired topic and gain awareness of what will be investigated during research. In addition, “it tries to identify homogenous groups of cases if the grouping is not previously known. Because it is exploratory, it does not make any distinction between dependent and independent variables.” (“Conduct and Interpret a Cluster Analysis,” n.d., para. 1). Thus, within the framework of brainstorming, I narrowed the topic of substance abuse. Research stated that “substance use disorders are the clinical term for addiction to alcohol or drugs, which causes significant impairment. More than 20 million Americans have substance use disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health” (“Addiction & substance use rehabilitation,” n.d., p. 2). This topic is one of the most critical for healthcare, which first entered clustering regarding the chosen paper direction.

The next step was to write down ideas and problems regarding the problem of using substances. Thus, aspects such as the general population, characteristics, symptoms, and treatment methods were highlighted. Then, with the help of additional research, the listed aspects were clarified. For example, people with substance abuse are characterized by violations of psychological and physical well-being. Within the framework of possible interventions, such as behavioral counseling, a medication that promotes detoxification, and in extremely serious cases, rehabilitation is possible.

After obtaining all the information that may be needed to conduct research on substance abuse, it is necessary to constantly check and revise the invention strategy. In other words, the following valuable aspect is reading the written clusters and getting rid of unnecessary data judgments. This is due to the fact that any prejudices and personal prejudices can prevent the achievement of the most productive outcomes of work. In addition, a particularly valuable part of clustering is determining the population that can benefit most from future research.

At the end of the cluster analysis, another audit of the collected information becomes final. Moreover, verification also implies not only grammatical or lexical aspects but also requires grammatical verification. Providing these aspects provides an opportunity in the future, when conducting research, to get the attention of the audience and make awareness of the relevance of the problem.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that conducting any research necessitates such qualities of examiners as organization and education. However, in solving the problem of lack of concentration or attention for training, the compilation of a specialized calendar can help. Within the framework of this calendar, students are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge by studying multiple sources regarding the topic under study and learn to control themselves and devote enough time to creating the best and most productive work regime. Thus, I chose cluster ways of collecting information, and I found it quite spectacular and improvements. This strategy was perfect for me, as it contributed to the constant generation of various ideas and assumptions. Moreover, it allowed me to be more organized and disciplined about choosing a future research topic. I can confidently say that I will use this method to solve problems in an educational setting. I am considering this opportunity in order to gain an understanding of what should be included in cluster analysis. In the future, it may be particularly effective in studying more complex and narrow topics regarding the use of prohibited substances. Moreover, I can use the cluster analysis developed within the framework of this work as a guide for the formation and use of a new.

10.00 – I go to sleep after eating my dinner and watching TV for 20 minutes. 

That’s all about my daily routine. 

Conclusion:

I make some changes in the routine when I have free time or leisure time. Overall that’s a huge experience for me to follow this productive routine.

When I get back home after the playing in the field, I feel very tired. And then I wash and take rest for 30 minutes. I eat some juice or something else that my mom prepares for me. I start to study at 6.30 PM in the evening. 

Most of the day, I keep reading till 9.30. That’s the most important part for my study. I prepare all my homework and do some extra studies too. And then I eat my dinner and watch Television before sleep.

That’s all about my daily routine. I try to follow this routine always. But sometimes I need to bring some changes in the routine. And when I spend holiday and off day from school, I can’t follow this routine at all. I think this routine is helping me to use my time in the best work and complete my study tasks properly.

School Time: 

I go to school at 9.30 o’clock in the morning. My father drops me here with his car. I get a break at 1 o’clock after four classes in a row. And finally, I go home at 4 PM with my mom . 

She comes to pick me up from school every day. Because it takes almost 20 minutes to go home from school by car. I enjoy school time very much.

Eat and Sleep Routine: 

I eat my breakfast and then I eat my lunch in the school break time. I take my lunch with me. My mother is very aware of my food. She always cooks something interesting to me. I love eating Pizza and Burger, but she doesn’t buy me that kind of fast food. 

She prefers to cook them for me. I love her cooked Pizza very much. And finally, after reading and watching TV at night at 10 o’clock, I go for my sleep. When I go to bed, I think about my entire day. 

Holiday Routine: 

When my school is close and I have lots of spare time, my daily routine becomes a bit different. I add time for video games, playing in the field with friends, and spending more time with my cousins.

I am putting the finishing touches on my semester plan and as I begin to plug in the dates, I feel so anxious. Even though I know the plan will help, my anxiety flares up each and every time I plan. I like my work (I’ve got some great writing projects this semester), but I feel pressure because I’m teaching three different courses this semester and I feel sad about not having more fun stuff planned. It’s hard for me to plan treats because they usually cost money, and I have some serious financial goals right now that have me being conservative with my spending. So I have a ton of work to do and not a lot of fun.

All Work and No Play

Dear All Work,

I appreciate your willingness to create a semester plan for what sounds like a busy term, and I applaud your work toward meeting long-term writing and financial goals. It’s perfectly normal to experience some negative feelings when you create a plan, because the planning process itself forces you to make hard choices: How much work can I realistically complete in 15 weeks? Which projects have priority? How much time can I spend on my research while teaching new courses? As always, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are a few questions I can suggest to shift how you feel about a term where you are doing a lot of important foundational work for your future success.

What Is the Source of Your Anxiety?

Any time you’re feeling anxious, it’s important to pause and identify the specific cause of that feeling. For example, when I feel anxious planning my semester, it's almost always grounded in one of three problems: 1) the volume of work in my plan (I've put so many projects in it that it feels suffocating), 2) the type of work I’m planning (I'm not very excited about the projects so the work seems like drudgery on a daily basis), and/or 3) the plan is all work (there's no fun in the plan, so my life seems one-dimensional). You may have totally different causes, but the point is that if you can identify the source of the anxious feelings, it will point you in a direction that immediately feels better. For example, this semester, I felt anxious about the type of work in my plan and the fact that my plan was all work, so I took a few projects out and I added some personal fun.

Are You Engaging in Black-and-White Thinking?

Because many negative emotions reside in flawed thinking, I also like to take a step back and examine my thought process for any cognitive distortions. In your letter, I’m sensing a common one: black-and-white thinking. Is it really true that there are only two possibilities: fun that costs money or no fun at all? If you can pinpoint your flawed either/or thinking, you can turn it around by asking: How is it possible to have both (fun and meet my financial goals)? Once you start looking for free fun, you can find lots of it! My favorites are playing with other people’s dogs, making art out of random stuff (aka junk) around my house, hosting a Google hangout with faraway friends and reading children’s literature (borrowed from the local library). Free fun is all around you if you’re actively looking for it, and many cities have lists of free fun activities.

What Role Does Fun Play in Your Thinking?

Let me pose one final question: How do you understand the role of fun in your creative thinking? It sounds like you’re doing a lot of serious foundational work this term to move forward on your writing projects, your teaching portfolio and your finances, so I want to encourage you to consider that during heavy terms of teaching, research and personal growth, fun may be something critical to meeting your goals. In other words, while you’re engaged in leisure activities, your brain continues to move and you may find that once you’re absorbed in something non-work related, you suddenly find inspiration, a great idea or a solution to the problem you’ve been working on. I find that pleasurable activities stimulate a part of my brain that often goes unused in my analytical work and enhances my productivity.

I know it’s counterintuitive to suggest that allowing yourself to have fun may lead to greater creativity and productivity. And I realize that most academics run around talking about how busy and exhausted they are as badges of honor. But the most productive professors I know plan their work, focus on the activities that really matter and engage in fun (without guilt or shame). I hope taking a few minutes to pause, examine your thinking and take a fresh look at your situation will shift your approach to the new term and make space for a little fun on the tenure track.

Managing your time means scheduling your time. Figuring out a schedule that works for you and keeps you moving forward involves planning ahead, creating a weekly schedule, and setting goals for the day.

Planning Ahead  

At the start of a new semester or at the start of any significant marker of time (e.g., summer, winter break), take a moment to think about your goals and to take a broad view of the upcoming time. 

Below are three steps you can take to get started on planning ahead :

  • Get comfortable speaking Spanish. 
  • Learn a programming language. 
  • Improve my research skills by learning how to use a library database. 
  • Participate one time every day in each class. 
  • Use a physical monthly calendar or use an electronic color-coded calendar to map out deadlines and requirements for the semester (e.g., paper deadlines, exam dates, application deadlines, program requirement milestones, other major events).  
  • With the firm dates mapped out, take each goal you have identified, break it down into steps, and schedule those steps on your calendar. In this way, you can determine if your full set of goals is realistic. 
  • If they will not all fit into your calendar, then you know that you will need to prioritize the goals. Prioritizing your goals enables you to make a plan to accomplish the ones that matter most. 
  • Some of your work might depend on you staying healthy, on others completing their tasks, etc., so you need to be prepared to be flexible. 
  • Having a system to keep track of your long-term goals will help you not forget them and will help you reevaluate and possibly reprioritize them, depending on what circumstances dictate. 
  • Be intentional in your assessment of your circumstances – some that seem beyond your control might not be as uncontrollable as you think. 
  • Be sure to enlist help from your adviser or your academic or social support network, if you do not think you can objectively assess the controllability of your situation. The Academic Resource Center is part of your academic support network; you can attend an ARC workshop on goal setting or time management or schedule an appointment with an academic coach at the ARC for individualized assistance with planning ahead. 

In addition to taking a broad view of your time, it is also necessary to take narrower views of your time to keep moving ahead productively. Consider making a weekly schedule and setting daily goals. 

Make a Weekly Schedule  

Creating a plan for the week at the start of each week increases the odds that you will get your work done because a weekly schedule imposes structure on your time. It also helps you assess how much time you want or need to spend on various tasks and activities. 

Below are four steps you can take to get started on making a weekly schedule :

You can use a printable weekly schedule template , Google calendar, or whatever calendaring system is most effective for you. 

  • Wake up time. 
  • Focused work blocks scheduled for your hardest work when you are at your best. 
  • General work blocks for tasks that require less mental energy (e.g., responding to email). 
  • Classes, sections, lab, study group, meetings, etc. 
  • Meals. 
  • Exercise. 
  • Free time. 
  • Buffer time. 
  • Bedtime 
  • Identify when you deviate from your schedule. 
  • Try to assess why you deviated. For example, did you not allocate enough time for the task because a task was more time-consuming or harder than you thought it would be? Did you get distracted? Did you spend too much on an unimportant task? 
  • To do this you might need to break tasks down further, use strategies to reduce distractions, divide your time differently, etc. 
  • Start a new weekly schedule plan using your preferred calendar toolIf you would like help or an objective sounding board to make a weekly plan, use the ARC Scheduler to make an appointment with an Academic Coach . 
  •  As you near the end of the semester, consider making a plan for all of Reading Period and Finals.  

Set Daily Goals  

Approaching each day with intention will enable you to get through the day without having to burden yourself with decisions throughout the day. 

  • Decide in the morning (or the night before) what you are going to get done during the focused blocks of time that you have mapped out for that day in your weekly schedule. Put those specific tasks on your to-do list.

  • Failure to complete a planned task can decrease confidence and start a cycle of avoidance. 
  • Conversely, checking the boxes or crossing off achieved goals is hugely satisfying! Completing a task will motivate you to move on to the next one or even exceed your current goal. 
  • Make an actual to-do list – in a notebook, on an index card, on your computer. 
  • At the end of the workday, review your to-do list, and enjoy looking at everything you got done. 
  • Did you avoid a task for some reason? 
  • Did you underestimate how long other tasks would take? 
  • Did you have too many unexpected interruptions? 
  • Use these reflections to guide your plans for tomorrow. 
  • Examples include incorporating new comments into a draft, emailing a professor about a letter of recommendation, or spending one hour searching for sources for your research paper. 
  • If you find yourself procrastinating frequently, book a meeting with an academic coach to discuss further. 

Setting Achievable Goals Through Social Accountability

Accountability hours , accountability groups , and coworking spaces offer opportunities to practice setting achievable goals. They also boost productivity and provide students with both community and a sense of purpose. The ARC hosts daily Accountability Hours (M-Th), where students are invited to work in quiet company with an ARC Coach and other students either in person at 1414 Massachusetts Avenue or on Zoom. Participants share their goals for the hour and then get to work.  Study groups are also welcome to use Accountability Hours as a space to connect and work.

The project schedule consists of the project’s terminal elements and their start and finish dates. The terminals elements are usually the elements which are lowest in a schedule and cannot be further divided. Such items can be estimated in terms of the resource requirements, budget and duration for the tasks. The process of scheduling a project involves proper allocation of resources to different tasks in the project (Neumann et al, 2011). During this process, the project manager should ensure that he/she has a work breakdown structure which will indicate all the schedules and the resources required for each task (Mubarak, 2010).

The critical path is the longest path that a project can take to be completed.

Consider the PERT diagram below

In the above PERT diagram, the critical path is 1 – 2 – 6. It is the longest path. Once the critical path has been identified, project schedule can then be determined. It is very easy to schedule a project after establishing the critical path and the duration for the project is known.

Each activity can then be allocated some resources which should not exceed the ones on the critical path. The critical path helps to determine the overall project duration. This will help during the projects scheduling to allocate resources and ensure that the project is completed on time. Since the task durations depend on the project resources, some tasks can be started before other tasks complete and in some cases the resources can be increased so as to ensure that the project completes promptly.

In situations whereby the calculated project completion does not equal the target completion date, resources can be increased while the duration of other tasks shortened. Some tasks can also overlap – start before the completion of other tasks. This helps to ensure that the limited resources are shared between different tasks. This can be achieved through a process called crushing the schedule or resource leveling (Mubarak, 2010).

It is possible, though, to create a writing schedule that fits into your schedule and gets you on track to finish your first draft and eventually your first novel.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by writing?

Your teacher or professor assigns a writing project, and you think “I don’t even know how to start?”  Or do you struggle to begin any other piece of writing that seems large?   Even experienced writers get nervous about writing something whether it’s a book, poem, blog post, essay, article, or research paper.  There is that moment where a writer asks, “How do I do this?” The best thing to do then is to think through what you must do and create a writing schedule. It is the roadmap to completing a final draft.

There are 4 key steps to creating a schedule: 1) understanding the project, 2) listing what you need to do, 3) selecting the time and dates when you will do your tasks, and 4) keeping on task.

Let’s dive into how to create an effective writing schedule for your next project.

4 Steps to Creating an Effective Writing Schedule 

4 Easy Steps to Creating a Writing Schedule

Step #1:  Determine the writing goal and requirements for your project.

If you are creating a schedule for an assignment such as an essay or academic paper, you will have a description of what the assignment is and what is required.  You may have information about how the assignment is evaluated too.

Read through that information and determine what you need for your final copy.  Here are some questions to help you understand your assignment:

  • What is the goal of this project?
  • What are the specific requirements?
  • What subjects or topics do I need to write about
  • When is it due? Are there deadlines for different parts of the assignment (a date for when you need to write a rough draft)?
  • What type of writing is it? (e.g., expository, narrative, etc.)
  • What style and reference guide do I need to follow? (e.g., APA, Chicago Style Guide, MLA, etc.)

If you are writing a nonfiction book, fiction, poetry, etc. think through the goal, purpose of your project, and what the expectations are for that genre.  You may also want to think about how you will organize your project.  If it’s a poetry collection, do you have a theme each section will cover? If it’s a nonfiction book how will you organize your sections or content?  These questions will help you understand what you want to accomplish.

Step #2 List everything you need to do to complete your writing project.

Write down the tasks you need to do. Include both specific things for the writing project and phases of the writing process.  Here’s an example list for writing a research paper.

  • Brainstorm topics or ideas
  • Create a research question
  • Find sources
  • Take notes on the research
  • Organize your notes and plan what you will write
  • Write the first draft of your paper
  • Revise the draft
  • Edit your research paper
  • Hand in your final research paper

Next, look at each of these tasks and estimate how long you will take to complete each thing.  You can write these estimates next to each task.

Step 3: Create your schedule.

Look back at everything you need to do, and write down a date and time of when you will do each task.  Keep in mind both how long you think each thing will take and the deadline.  You can create a schedule in a planner you have, create a separate table or chart, or just use a calendar such as Google Calendar.

Whichever method you select you should have these categories:

  • The Writing Project Title
  • A Short Project Description 
  • Date -The day on which something will be done.
  • Time -The exact time when you will work on tasks.
  • Tasks —What tasks you will accomplish.

You can use this method with any type of writing project:  article, blog, book, essay, poetry collection, etc.

Step #4 Stick to your schedule.

A writing schedule won’t help you if you don’t actually follow it.  You need to do the work and write. Here are some ideas on how to be accountable and complete your writing project.

Accountability Partners

One way to keep on track with your writing is to have an accountability partner.  An accountability partner is someone you can meet up with regularly where you each share what you accomplished.  If you haven’t done what you need to do, you can discuss why you haven’t done it and plan on how you will catch up with your work.  Accountability partners can encourage and motivate each other to keep going no matter how hard something seems.

The one downside to accountability partners is that they can’t always talk you through writing difficulties.  So, if you are not accomplishing a project because you don’t know how to write it, you should seek help from a teacher or tutor.

Writing Groups/Communities

A writing group can give you advice, tips, and feedback on your writing.  They may have a regular meeting time where everyone needs to bring their work. This approach means that you will have to have your writing done before the meeting.  You can get comments and suggestions from other members of the group.  If you want to advance your writing, getting feedback on it is a great way to further your writing talent.

However, unless you form a group based on people who all have the same project to complete, you won’t have guidance through parts of your writing assignment. If members aren’t aware of the specifics of your project, they can’t comment on whether or not your work fulfills the assignment’s goals and requirements.

Self-discipline

Intro.9.2.30 Smith v. Arizona : The Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause and Testimony of a Substitute Expert Witness

The Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause guarantees a criminal defendant the right to be confronted with the witnesses against him. 1 Footnote U.S. Const. amend. VI . Consequently, a trial court may not admit a testimonial statement into evidence when the defendant has not had the opportunity to cross-examine the person who made the statement. 2 Footnote See Crawford v. Washington , 541 U.S. 36, 68–69 (2004) . The Supreme Court in Crawford recognized the existence of two common law Confrontation Clause exceptions that historically permitted the admission of testimonial statements, but it did not expressly approve or disapprove of either. See Crawford , 541 U.S. at 56 & n.6, 62 (recognizing the dying declarations and forfeiture by wrongdoing exceptions to the Confrontation Clause but declining to adopt either expressly). For more information, see, Amdt6.5.3.1 Admissibility of Testimonial Statements . Although the Supreme Court has not fully explained which statements are testimonial, it has held that a trial court may not admit into evidence a forensic laboratory report offered to prove a particular fact (e.g., that materials police found at a defendant’s house are drugs) if the accused has not had the opportunity to cross-examine the analyst who prepared or certified it. 3 Footnote Bullcoming v. New Mexico , 564 U.S. 647, 652 (2011) ; Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts , 557 U.S. 305, 308, 311 (2009) . Testimony by a surrogate witness who is familiar with general laboratory procedures, but otherwise uninvolved in the relevant certification, is insufficient to satisfy a defendant’s constitutional right. Bullcoming , 564 U.S. at 652 . The central issue in Smith v. Arizona is whether the Confrontation Clause prohibits a trial court from admitting testimony of a forensic scientist that relies on the analysis of a nontestifying forensic analyst when the testifying expert (1) offers some independent opinion; and (2) relies upon the nontestifying expert’s testimonial statements to explain the testifying expert’s opinion rather than to prove a particular fact. 4 Footnote Supreme Court of the United States Granted & Noted List, October Term 2023 Cases for Argument, No. 22-899, https://www.supremecourt.gov/qp/22-00899qp.pdf .

During Jason Smith’s trial on Arizona drug charges, the court admitted into evidence a forensic scientist’s testimony that materials seized from his father’s residence were methamphetamine, marijuana, and cannabis. 5 Footnote State v. Smith, No. 1 CA-CR 21-0451, 2022 WL 2734269, at *1 (Ariz. Ct. App. July 14, 2022). The scientist had reached his conclusions based on his review of testing conducted by a former, nontestifying forensic scientist whose analysis was not offered as evidence. 6 Footnote Id . Smith was subsequently convicted and sentenced for the drug offenses. 7 Footnote Id . He appealed his conviction to the Arizona Court of Appeals, contending that the trial court violated his Sixth Amendment confrontation rights by admitting drug-analysis testimony in which the testifying expert relied on data generated by a non-testifying expert. 8 Footnote Id .

The Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed Smith’s convictions and sentences, determining that the trial court’s admission of the expert witness’s drug-analysis testimony did not violate Smith’s Sixth Amendment confrontation rights. 9 Footnote Id . The court determined that an expert witness may reasonably rely on a nontestifying expert’s reports or analysis when offering an independent opinion, provided the testifying witness does not serve as a mere conduit for the non-testifying expert’s opinions. 10 Footnote Id . at *4 (internal quotation marks omitted). Because Smith had the opportunity to cross-examine the testifying expert and could have subpoenaed the nontestifying witness to testify at trial, the court held there was no Confrontation Clause violation. 11 Footnote Id . Furthermore, the appeals court determined that none of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Sixth Amendment precedents required exclusion of the drug-analysis testimony. 12 Footnote Id . at *5. After the Arizona Supreme Court denied discretionary review, Smith petitioned the Supreme Court to review the Arizona Court of Appeals’ judgment. 13 Footnote See Supreme Court of the United States Granted & Noted List, October Term 2023 Cases for Argument, No. 22-899, https://www.supremecourt.gov/qp/22-00899qp.pdf .

In his Supreme Court brief, petitioner Smith argues that Arizona violated his Sixth Amendment confrontation rights when the prosecution offered testimony by a substitute expert that conveyed a nontestifying forensic analyst’s testimonial statements in notes and a lab report without affording an opportunity for Smith to cross-examine the nontestifying analyst. 14 Footnote Brief for the Petitioner at 12, Smith v. Arizona, No. 22-899 (U.S. Nov. 13, 2023). Smith also argues that he should not be faulted for declining to subpoena the nontestifying forensic analyst because a defendant bears no burden to call the prosecution’s absent analyst. 15 Footnote Id . at 15. By contrast, Arizona contends that the nontestifying forensic analyst’s statements were not offered for their truth and that the Confrontation Clause does not prohibit an expert from relying on out-of-court facts or revealing them to explain the expert’s opinion. 16 Footnote Brief for the Respondent at 1–2, Smith v. Arizona, No. 22-899 (U.S. Dec. 13, 2023). Arizona also argues that Smith’s position would reimagine and vastly expand the reach of the Confrontation Clause, requiring testimony from a parade of analysts in countless individual cases. 17 Footnote Id . at 2. In an amcius brief supporting neither party, the United States argues that the Court should vacate and remand the Arizona appeals court’s decision on grounds specific to the facts of Smith’s case without more broadly calling into question the standard evidentiary rules governing expert testimony. 18 Footnote Brief for the United States as Amicus Curiae Supporting Neither Party at 7–8 , Smith v. WASSCE 2024: WAEC Sets New Date For General Mathematics Papers

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to announce to school authorities and candidates that the schedule for the General Mathematics papers for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024, has been changed.

The exams will now take place on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

The revised schedule is as follows:

Mathematics Paper 2: 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM Mathematics Paper 1: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Candidates are urged to report to their respective examination centers promptly on the specified date. It is crucial for candidates to note that there will be no alternative arrangements for those who miss the examination on June 25, 2024.

WAEC stresses the importance of adherence to the new schedule to ensure the smooth administration of the examinations. The council apologizes for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciates the cooperation of all involved parties to facilitate a successful examination process.

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
